Prof. Frans Cremers from the Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands

We are pleased to announce Prof. Frans Cremers from the Department of Human Genetics at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands as the first awardee of a hopefully long-lasting tradition of the European Vision Award. His superb work can roughly be subvided in four thematic areas:
Prof. Cremers has discovered many important eye genes and been part of groundbreaking studies. These studies have significantly enhanced our knowledge of the genetic basis of retinal degeneration, which can now be applied towards diagnostic and therapeutic applications to directly benefit patients. Needless to say, all the above makes Prof. Cremers and his laboratory to a tremendous asset for the entire scientific community by pursuing serious genetic research.
Furthermore, Frans possesses exceptional personal qualities, which make him not only a scientist with high work ethics and integrity but also an efficient leader of a truly world-class research laboratory directed towards deciphering the causes and preventing devastating effects of blindness.
